4. Finally, pick out edges to blur even further using the F-X Confusion brush found in the F-X brush category. In the Property Bar set the Opacity to 100%, Grain to 100%, and Jitter to 1.43. By blending the brightest colors into the background you will be able to diffuse the light in the same way that sunlight scatters when it hits an object. This is called subsurface scattering.
STEP 8 APPLY THICKER PAINT
Renoir used the greatest variety of yellows, sometimes using chrome yellow, Naples yellow, and yellow ocher in the same painting. He also built his yellow up thickly, using dabs of yellow to show how the sun played off his figures. In this final step we will add a final layer of yellow and white impasto to create more depth in the paint.
1. Choose the Real Oils Smeary brush from the Oils brush category. Open up the Impasto menu (Window/Brush Control Panel/Impasto) and set the Draw To method to Color and Depth. Set the Depth slider to 10% and Expression to Direction.
2. Sample colors from the background with the Color Wand and use these colors to make shorter dabs in the garment. After you lay down the dabs, smear them with the F-X Confusion brush to blend them into the underlying paint.
3. Next, weâll add another layer of thicker paint. Create a new layer (Layer/New Layer and name this âthick paint.â
4. From the Color Panel (Window/Color/Color Panel), choose a yellow hue.
5. From the Paper Library (Window/Paper Panels/Paper Libraries), select the Worn Pavement paper (you can download this from the companion site.) Under the Papers Panel (Window/Paper Panels/Papers) set the Scale to 80%, Contrast to 150%, and Brightness to 50%.
6. Select the Square Hard Pastel brush. In the Property Bar set the Grain to 7%, the Bleed to 100%, and the Resaturation to 75%.
